Using Excel to write tests and quizzes for Docebo

Post by max »

Creating tests and quizzes with the built-in testing function in Docebo (or in any other Lms, for that matter) can be a bit of a tedious, time-consuming and error-prone task.
Especially because what you normally do is copy-n-paste from a word document or something like that, probably provided by the subject matter expert (SME).
Maybe you know there is a file format that allows you to import and export tests: it is called GIFT, you can find documentation here http://docs.moodle.org/22/en/GIFT_format
GIFT format allows someone to use a text editor to write multiple-choice, true-false, short answer, matching missing word and numerical questions in a simple format that can be imported. The GIFT format is also an export file format available in Question bank. The format has been developed within the Moodle Community but other software may support it to a greater or lesser degree.
The problem is that the GIFT syntax is not simple at all, thus making it impossible to ask SME's to create their tests in this format.

Here's the deal: you can use excel (and you can ask SME's to use excel) to write their tests and - bang! - you can export them in a perfectly formatted GIFT file that works well with Docebo.
I found the excel template to perform this magic here http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=66660. I tested all the versions you can find in the discussion, this one I attach is the one that works best.
