Responsive template and how SCOs launch

Post by gray »

Hi everyone (as I have just joined the forum)

I have a question about forma - apologies if it has been answered elsewhere.

I believe a responsive template may be coming in v2 - when is this likely to be available?

I have uploaded a responsive SCORM 1.2 LO but as it appears inside a lightbox window it does not adapt responsively to the screen size. There doesn't seem to be an option in forma.lms to launch the LO in a new window/tab (and the content tool doesn't either).

Until a responsive template is available, is there a workaround to launch LOs in a new window/tab?

Many thanks
Graham

Hi Graham,
welcome to the community! :-)

You're right, Scorms are launched in a lightbox window that normally should adapt responsively to the screen size. At least, it does with most of the authoring tools. Don't know which tool you are using but, for instance, scorms made with Articulate Presenter or Storyline don't communicate the right size to the Lms, so 10-odd pixels are cut off. We're aware of that, but in this case it's Articulate's fault.

We happen to produce most of our content with Articulate products and this was a big issue for us. The workaround we use (and we suggest) is the same you already thought about.

Inside our Articulate projects, we select the option of having our Scorm open in a new tab.
This solves, and everything works fine.

Unfortunately, Forma doesn't have an option to open a scorm in a new tab, you should find a way to do that with the content.

If your tool doesn't allow you to do that via its interface (are you sure?), I guess the only workaround is manually editing your manifest file to obtain the desired behavior.

Hi Max

Thank you for your welcome and reply. My responsive LO was created using the ADAPT responsive e-learning framework.

I was seeing whether it would play well inside forma but for mobiles I think a responsive lms template is required. When do you predict v2 of forma.lms with a responsive template will be released?

Many thanks

We've been working extensively on that in the last months, and we already made many substantial improvements. There isn't an official release date yet, but we're confident we can release v2 early next year. A minor release will probably come before that.

This seems to still be an issue in 2021. I also just launched a couple of scorms and they open in a lightbox which looks fine on desktop but really bad on mobile as it does not fit the screen. We can give the users an extra button to press to open in full screen but it would be better if this was inbuilt in FormaLMS. Perhaps a feature coming in version 3?

Very impressed otherwise with this LMS.

Hi Dave
the launching of SCORM objects in the iframe on the same window or in a new window is controlled by the SCORM itself, not by the Lms.
The same applies to the size of the window: Forma displays the scorm the way it was supposed to be displayed, and if the object is not designed to fill the window it's not due to Forma.
That being said: in version 3 the scorm player has been redesigned and it's much more responsive.

Please check the publishing options of the scorms you have created, since the issue will be there and not in Forma.

Hi Max,

Thanks for getting back so quickly.

Yes I contacted the software creators today but not hoping for much. Having said that, I can launch their content on another LMS and it opens full screen automatically so the LMS can probably do something too. The other platform gives you the choice to place an Exit button on top of the content or not.

I would love to be able to test the new version but it seems that this is not publicly available and €75 seems a slightly high price to just trial the platform. Maybe there is a public demo of version 3 somewhere where we can upload SCORM content and play with it on a shared installation? That would be a great start.

FormaLMS is very nice (extremely nice) but this is a stumbling block for me. If the content looks bad on mobile it is just not going to work.

Grazie.

Moodle does have an option to open scorms in full screen which while not being 100%, is about 95% and would be acceptable.

Hi,

yes, I know that Moodle does that. Forma does not, but most of the authoring tools govern that option themselves.

You don't pay to trial out Forma. Forma is open source and you can trial version 2.4.4. Version 3 is reserved to association members, those who choose to support our work. In a few months we'll release 3.1 and then 3.0 will be released to the general public.

Finally: I don't know what tools you use to generate scorms, but all the content that we have on our LMS' (Articulate, iSpring, Captivate and many other custom tools) plays beautifully on Forma 2 and Forma 3.
