Course-Catalog-Category relationships

Hi, I'm a newbie here. I can't seem to find any info in the documentation on how Courses, Catalogs and Categories are related to each other. What I want to do, is to have a top-level topic 'Politics' (amongst others). This contains a number of sub-topics such as Citizens' Assemblies, Universal Basic Income, Proportional Representation etc..

Each of these sub-topics is comprised of a number of separate Units which can be followed individually in sequence, and which together make up the 'Course'. So, if my sub-topics are equivalent to a 'Course',:
  • what are my 'Units' in Forma LMS language?
  • what are my top-level topics in Forma LMS language?

Hi Bob

- Category should be used to help users browse through the different topics in your LMS. So "Politics" could be one category, with its sub-categories, and so on. That, if you think you will have more than one main category. If not, just use "assemblies", "UBI" etc. as main categories
- A "Course" is normally a set of related items and contents that amount to... well a course
- A course is made of "Learning Objects" that will be followed individually in a sequence and together make up the Course, that's right.
- LO's can be anything: an html page, a glossary, a scorm object etc. Videos or rich text pages, as the ones I think you normally use, can be embedded in an html page by pasting the embed code

The Catalogue page is where users are displayed the available courses they can self-subscribe to. You can have a single catalogue (in that case you don't need to do anything, just set the courses as "visible to everybody"). Or you can have multiple catalogues to be shown - for example - to different types of users. In that case you are supposed to create multiple catalogues, import courses into them and assign them to users (or groups or nodes). Every catalogue will then be displayed as a specific TAB. If not necessary, just use the single catalogue.
